Chapter Fifteen

“Five minutes! Everyone better be on the boat in five minutes if you want to eat tonight as a family!” Helena’s authoritative voice boomed through the house as a drill instructor trying to train his troops. Teri checked her makeup and headed for the stairs, bumping into Carter on her way out.

“Race ya.” He winked as he started down the stairs.

“No thanks. You totally cheated last time. Bastard.” She grinned as she punched him in the arm. They reached the foot of the stairs and Teri headed to the dock as Carter turned towards the kitchen.

“I’ll be right there. Just have to grab something.” He winked and she said,

“Whatever.” Heading to the family’s yacht, she noticed that Drake was already on board, so she casually walked the long pier so she could board. She turned around to see the lights on in the house and wondered what was taking Carter. She was assisted on board and handed a glass of champagne by a charming steward named Paulo. Drake was in the captain’s bridge so Teri made herself at home on deck and waited for the rest of the family to board the vessel. Looking up the pier, she noted two figures walking towards them that could only be Helena and Carter, so she assumed they would be heading out shortly. They had planned to make a trip around the islands then stop off on the east shore at a restaurant Helena had been raving about for months. Just as Carter was assisting Helena on board, Drake emerged and joined them as the boat headed out to sea. Drake tried to make the most of the time he had to spend with them since he worked such insane hours. Helena had been trying to get him to work less hours and take more vacation time but Drake Cole would probably die in his office at the age of a hundred and ten.

“So, Teri. How’s school going?” Drake was an attractive man with salt and pepper hair that he kept perfectly groomed at all times. He was tall, like Carter, and if the younger Cole aged near as well as the elder, he would be a very attractive older gentleman one day.

“Oh, you know. I only have a semester left then hopefully I get an internship at Rawlings and Kline.” R and K was one of the largest marketing firms on the east coast and with any luck, she could get on with them and make her way through the marketing world, making junior exec in three years.

“If that doesn’t pan out for you, head on over to Cole Realty and I’ll put you on my staff.” He winked and she nodded with a smile, only replying “sure thing, pops” as she sipped her fruity beverage.

“Teri’s going to do well no matter where she ends up, dear.” Helena spoke up as she lit a cigarette. “She’s too much like her mother.” Carter chuckled and looked at Teri, then to Helena as he took a sip of his whiskey.
